For those anxiously waiting, your 5-11 year-old can now get an Omicron-updated bivalent booster. (Everyone ages 12+ is already eligible).
❓ What are the options for bivalent boosters?
➡️ Moderna: Ages 6 and up
➡️ Pfizer: Ages 5 and up
The booster is available to anyone *at least* two months since their last shot (whether primary series or booster).
Many experts recommend waiting 3 months after a COVID infection to get boosted. You might also choose to wait 3 months from a previous shot to get the full benefit from the booster.
An earlier booster won’t do any harm, but you are less likely to get a boost if antibody levels are already sky high (like topping up a glass that is already full).
This decision also means the old (monovalent) booster will no longer be available for this age group.
The boosters received both U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval and a CDC recommendation today, so the new shots should be available for kids within days. Pfizer doses were pre-ordered by jurisdictions last week, and Moderna has said they can use lower doses from supply already in the field.
If you and/or your kids are eligible and the timing is right, go get that boost!
